McDonald's Operator Op/Ed

We received a great, lengthy
comment from a McDonald's
Operator but due to format
restrictions on this site it had to
be broken up in three comments.

A full length version is now posted HERE

Thanks to the Operator who took the time to write this.

Let us know how your next business review goes, especially "meets financial metrics". You must be ready to retire soon. Good Luck.

“Let us know how your next business review goes”

It’s that kind of defeatist attitude that keeps the Operator community from causing real change. Guess there will always be a certain number of Operators who are willing to belong to the “Thank you sir, May I have another” club.

It's not defeatist, it's realistic. It's easy to agree with him sitting by your computer in San Diego; but doing what this operator suggests, without legal standing, will get you nowhere with this company except eventually out the door.

I knew I was going to get that response. I'm not at my computer in San Diego but am working on my tablet at an airport. And I'm not comparing today's environment to anything I experienced as an Operator.

But I do have a vast amount of experience watching and working with people who had concerns about the way they were being treated by McDonald's. One thing is universal - if you're convinced you're going to get screwed over - you're going to get screwed over.

As anonymous wrote, "If what they ask is not good business then don't do it". How can anyone argue with that?

What does the operator suggest?

For the person arguing it is easy sitting from a computer in San Diego. McDonald's keeps you/us indentured surfs with zero backlash. In the past it was worth the "yes sir" mentality. Wake up!!!! I did. For them to monitor your balance sheet it is not for your benefit but for their initiatives. In a normal business you pay down debt for a glorious day of more cash flow or a breather. The Brand is not worth the sleepless night especially for the smaller operators. Richard you are right in your comments.

So to the operator that said "wake up!!", have you stopped sending McD your balance sheet? For how long? Have you bought any new stores or had existing stores rewritten since you stopped sending them your balance sheet? Sounds to me like you're planning to retire from the system. And to the operator who asked what I would suggest, it is very simple: If you're not happy with your sales, cash flow, profit margin or sleepless nights, I would work
with your state reps to get the laws changed to make franchising a more fair and equitable relationship, or find another line of work.

The franchisor is the problem, not your state reps. That last comment is insane. Ever take a look at what your paying in rents and the rebuild/ relo policy . Ever take a look at the costs of MRP with little ROI. Ever take a look at all the initiatives that they are suggesting that is just wasting your money. The list goes on and on. Leadership is the problem. To that last guy, it is people like you that need to exit. It's about time that the operators have a backbone and say no to all the political BS and get in your stores to clean them up. How many stores are filthy, have terrible service and awful quality. Snap out of it and get to work as a collective group to make productive changes.
