Not only is he chair, but PJB has more experience than much of the BOD. PJB has been with MCD for a little over ten years. The average BOD member only 5.5. So, as CEO, he was likely involved in hand-picking much of his future BOD. And they'll be loyal to him for the honor. .
Don was a little in over his head. The CEO position probably came too quickly for him, but I give him credit for being a good listener and working closely with O/O groups.

Since Chris K is both CEO and BoD Chair, there is no way he fires himself. Thompson did not have that luxury.
Thompson had restaurant experience at least ( D.O. in Denver, R.M. in San Diego, etc). Pajama boy has none, and it shows
