Starbucks' culture was very liberal from the beginning, led by their founder, Howard Schultz. Since Starbucks has no franchise base, this liberal culture is not balanced on the conservative side. It's just a bunch of corporate guys sitting around staring at their navels.
Since liberals tend to be pro-organized labor, no one at Starbucks panics when they hear about unions. So you are correct, the unions will destroy Starbucks. If nothing else, just because Starbucks will price itself out of the market to cover the extra overhead created by the unions. .
